Rheumatoid Arthritis - Some Facts

As an individual who has now been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis for over 5 years, it has taken a lot of research and involvement with the amazing Arthritis Foundation to learn exactly what Rheumatoid Arthritis is. There are so many misconceptions of what the disease actually is, I think people don’t realize just how different this disease is from typical aches and pains of joints.

Rheumatoid Arthritis, also known as RA, is caused by a severe inflammation in the joints because of a malfunction in the body’s immune system.

Typically our bodies respond to injury or illness by triggering temporary inflammation which allows us to know we have a problem and that we should get it treated or rest the joint. In RA, the immune system turns against healthy tissues and it is chronic rather than temporary.

Over time, the persistent inflammation does more than just cause pain. It actually can break down our joints and damage them permanently. It can also affect internal organs like the liver, heart, spleen and eyes.
People with RA typically have flares of pain caused by sudden onsets of severe inflammation. These flares can last for days or weeks. The body can move from joint to joint all over a person with RA’s body with no specific reason for the change of location.

Individuals with RA can see a doctor for diagnosis and to start medicines that work best for their specific arthritis. The more they can get involved with The Arthritis Foundation to learn about decreasing pain techniques, healthy activity, staying active, good nutrition, etc. the better they can control their disease and their flares!

It’s scary when pain hits, but the great news is that arthritis most definitely can be a part of our lives without controlling our lives. Here’s to staying active and working hard to help The Arthritis Foundation with their vision of creating a world FREE of arthritis pain!

West Virginia Sesquicentennial Celebration

I am SO thankful to have had the amazing opportunity to attend the Sesquicentennial Celebration at our beautiful state Capitol yesterday!

From vendors to live music to food and fun for every age, the event was truly incredible. The 3D movie and fireworks have been amazing since our birthday on Thursday, too!

Here is Michael, he has severe arthritis and I am SO proud to say that I've not only met him and his wonderful family during my reign, but we've become friends! He's dancing with a great group of teens from WV, along with his sister!

Here are a few photos from the day. What an amazing experience to represent WV on this landmark year!

This Week

After starting the week on Sunday night with a group of fabulous girls watching Miss USA, it's been a busy few days!

I will be in Beckley, WV for the remainder of the week with my Leadership WV Class of 2013 as we learn about Tourism in West Virginia. We will hear from amazing speakers, including one of my mentors, Emily Bennington and will have the opportunity to tour the Center for National Response Memorial Tunnel! Additionally, I'll be hitting the zip lines! :)

We are hosting a "West Virginia Hospitality Party" at our cabin on Thursday to wish HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our amazing state! 150th!

To cap off this week, I'll be heading to Charleston on Saturday to participate in the West Virginia 150th Celebration children's events. I'm so looking forward to this opportunity...I love spending the day with kids! :)

Cheers!

WV Coal Festival Children's Pageant

On Saturday, June 15th, I had the amazing opportunity to attend the West Virginia Coal Festival Children's Pageant. This pageant hosted competition for age divisions from babies to junior miss with around 70 contestants!

Madison, WV hosted the event with style and grace and you can tell that they are so excited about the WV Coal Festival this year. It is sure to be an incredible event to honor a true part of our state.

I want to say "GREAT JOB" to one of my favorite girls in the whole world, Kiki, who did a beautiful job as she crowned the new queens for this year. She represented the Coal Festival so well last year and is truly beautiful on the inside and the outside.

Also, congratulations to the new winners! Especially Megan Leake, the new Mrs. WV Coal Festival Queen. :)

Happy Father's Day

I am so thankful to write tonight to wish my Daddy Happy Father's Day one last time.

I'm so thankful for a dad who is supportive and has always given me the strength to chase my dreams. He shows how proud he is of me and taught me the importance of finding a great man to make my husband.

From "Daddy pix it" (which I still use when I need something fixed) to traveling for track meets to you walking me down the isle, you always have put me first and you've instilled values that I know will make me a stronger Mom in my future. I know how truly lucky I am!

I love you so much, Dad - I will always, always be your Sweet Baby Girl!

It's Working! We're Getting The Word Out! :)

Tonight, I had the absolutely incredible opportunity to meet with a group of individuals running as a part of the Genesis 5k Training Program. They work with the only RRCA Certified Running Coach in West Virginia!

This group is determined to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle and Matt is there to coach them 100% of the way. You can check out the website at www.wvruncoach.com

Not only did I get to meet this great group, I also had the opportunity to speak to them about Arthritis. I shared a little bit of my story and talked to them about the importance of an active lifestyle, even with this disease.

It was such an honor to talk to this group and to see them as they started their run for the evening. They are so inspiring!

Additionally, I met our new volunteer for the Arthritis Foundation, Keegan, who was diagnosed with arthritis when she was only 14 months old! I also met Johanna, who came to the run tonight when she learned that I was going to be talking about arthritis. Meeting Johanna tonight literally made me see that our work is paying off. We are spreading awareness about arthritis and it's working!

What an amazing evening. I'm so humbled, honored and blessed to know that I have the opportunity to support others and spread awareness as Mrs. West Virginia International.

I want to wish good luck to this group as they run their 5k this July...and I hope to see you at the Arthritis Foundation Jingle Bell Run on December 14th in Charleston! :)

Sleeping With Arthritis

Even SLEEP Can Cause a Flare!

Today's post is about something I love very much...sleep.

We sometimes forget just how much every day activities can affect arthritis, so I thought this would be a great reminder.

Yesterday, I woke up with an extremely stiff hand after I slept on it the night before. (oops). It hurt all day long until finally easing in the evening, but it was so frustrating to realize that even while I'm sleeping, I can still affect my arthritis.

So, I've developed a few tips for sleeping easier with arthritis.

  • Make sure you have comfortable pillows
  • Avoid curling and bending in compact positions - the more stretched out you are, the better
  • Try not to sleep on body parts like arms or hands
  • If you have a sore joint, lightly elevate it

Here's to pain-free mornings after a good night's rest!

This is my hound dog Sheldon and I taking a nice nap together :)
